Sweet Dreams & Nightmares - Jan Jackson
About Jan Jackson
Artist Jan Jackson works in an orignal style that she calls "Dreamscapes". Her images are driven by the written word, i.e. phrases, idioms, puns, curious expressions. Two dimensional works may be compared to needlework in that images seem stitched to canvas or paper with bright slashes of color. Jan's three dimensional work is also drawn from the written word. However, these pieces reflet political, social or sexual issues. For example, Baby Spoon while seemingly sweet, is a statement about genocide. Barbie Reconstructed is concerned with the lifetime process of changing in order to remain young. The painted bone pieces honot those animals killed for sport.
Jan holds a BA in Fine Art and Art History from Wayne State University, Detroit, Michigan. Her background in art history emerges in her use of whimsy and surrealism. Both painting and sculpture are well-planned and visualized for months before work begins. Often Jan's art, as in written work, takes on a voice of it's own.
