Homescapes & Winged Figures: Monotypes by Evey Jones

Posted in Artist News, Contemporary Art, Contemporary Art Prints, Contemporary Printmakers, Main Content, Monotypes on March 15th, 2010 by admin

Evey Jones’ monotypes are printed on delicate pieces of silk and on gorgeous, creamy paper. She successfully captures the momentary play of light and shadow over objects inside archetypal empty rooms.

Homescapes is the umbrella term that she uses to describe these pieces in which certain areas of the silk are saturated with solid black ink while others are left intact. The graphic intensity of these images eloquently conveys the core subject matter of Jones’ work: the almost unbearable burden of the absence of loved ones left to rest on the shoulders of those who still remain.

Each one of the pieces is slightly different. Some are somber and impervious to the outside world and others are flanked by balconies or windows that seem to offer an escape route to a better future. The empty chairs sometimes stand alone while, in some cases, a group of them seem to engage in melancholic recollection of people long gone. In any case, Jones accomplishes getting across a powerful message with only a whisper, a sigh that reaches the heart like a quiet yet lethal dart.

In Winged Figures, birds and angelic figures visit our consciousness perhaps trying to convey messages or propitiate a change. The common element are the wings as indicators of  a magical, prophetic presence. With their ability to fly these figures seem to do more than just move through space: they move through time and into the past to nest in our memories.

Poetry among the lines…

Posted in Artist News, Contemporary Abstract Art, Contemporary Art Prints, Contemporary Printmakers, Main Content, Spanish Artists on January 31st, 2010 by admin

Susana Murias has continued to explore the very essence of what reminiscing means…With a keen and unusual sensibility, she brings forth the smallest of memories and captures them on paper or canvas…She is a collector of memories…an indefatigable explorer of the faint landscapes of the mind. She pieces together the most delicate of details found in the dusty corners of a mind in constant siege by modern technology…Her memories are those brought about by the scent of  lovingly stored baby clothes, the interior views of modest houses,  children’s chalk drawings on a concrete playground…Quiet, discreet, minimalist recollections of a modern city dweller with a nostalgic mood that permeates every line, every shape…

…How does your garden grow?

It’s a bit early in the season in these parts, but Spring came shipped by air from a very far away place… A Mechanical Rose emerged from a bundle sent by Javier Albar…A gorgeous, intricate new piece that speaks of his own development as an artist…

There are other images included in this group that merit mention as well…All are masterfully crafted and uniquely Albar…The style and sure hand of this master printer inequivocally shows in his artwork…

Enjoy and do consider that only a few (sometimes as few as 4) of each one are printed…His editions are often quite small and sought after…

Tall Tales & Moving Houses

Posted in Artist News, Contemporary Abstract Art, Contemporary Art, Contemporary Art Prints, Main Content, Printmaking, Spanish Artists on January 20th, 2010 by admin

On Thursday, January 21st those lucky enough to be in Madrid will have the chance to visit Brita Prinz Gallery to view some of Juan Pablo Villalpando’s newest work.

What a pleasant experience it is to rest your eyes on these drawings, composed with exceptional honesty and simplicity. The lines are concise and the colors few, well chosen…Houses, short and clear…Legs, static and strangely furry…Man or animal?

The images prompt many associations and leave no mind-stone unturned. Follow them where they may take you…

Cabeza Habitada: “Inhabited Heads” by Moises Yagues

Posted in Main Content on November 9th, 2009 by admin

AUN QUEDAN PALABRAS QUE NO TE DIJE_56x56 xilografia y collage-letras
