Artist Statement

I speak of footprints, of scars, of passions, of dreams, of tall tales, of skin deep invisible maps that never stop being our own memories, becoming the highest point of our invention.

Nudity and Purity. Soft and vulnerable flesh, on which, subtly, is written the principal text, perhaps the only text that is inseparable from our selves, our experience. Wounds and desires that cannot be verbalized and appear disguised as symptoms.

Encodings of all that returns for having stayed uncomprehended and that, like liberation, seeks to make conscious the unconscious.

Experiences that become increasingly opaque, causing memories to be even more important than our experiences. Blindness that playfully warns, entering the wondrous world of our imagination, where, without preamble, takes control of any hint of sanity. Pains that take charge of emphasizing the presence of the body which melts with time.

Memories that insist with bias on the circularity of pleasure, of the past, of passion, of suffering. And always encrypted, codes that escape the understanding that was also there and that pretentiously refuses to be a part of your past.

And to continue dreaming, given the subject of dreams, is to continue remembering eternally.

‘Super Models and Swatch Watches’

Se presenta la exposición “Super Models and Swatch Watches” compuesta por las pinturas de la artista americana Katherine Bernhardt (1975, St. Louis, Missouri) en la galeria Marta Cervera. Modelos de moda y diseños de relojes Swatch pueblan la exposición de Bernhardt, todo pintado en un estilo suelto y colorido en enormes lienzos.

Katherine pinta retratos de mujeres y naturalezas muertas que tienen como base las imágenes de revistas de moda y conocidos símbolos de consumo. Utilizando acrílicos captura la mejor parte de la moda: el poder y el deseo, todo ello con un expresionismo que casi roza lo abstracto. Una gestual pincelada llena de fuerza y espontaneidad junto al goteo de vivos colores dan lugar a una fusión de glamour y caos en su obra. Piernas, brazos y torsos se mezclan, formando patrones extraños donde diferentes manchas se convierten en una mano, un vestido y un rostro. Las líneas que marcan las horas en los Swatch son profundas y completamente gestuales, pero también los son los contornos de los rostros o la curva del rimel en un ojo.

Las pinturas de Katherine Bernhardt encarnan el nerviosismo cosmopolita. Sus telas exuberantes integran todos los adornos de fantasía y lujo que rodean el mundo de la moda.

Piedra, Papel, Lienzo & Tijeras: Contemporary Spanish Artists II

Laura Cobb is an award winning New Mexico painter and clinical social worker. Her large acrylic and mixed media paintings on wood push deep into psychological territory blending creativity, passion and emotion with form, line and color. Her painting is profoundly informed by the five years she lived in a developing country, the tropical rainforest island of Pohnpei, Micronesia. Here Laura painted with rainwater collected from a self installed water catchment system. Recently Laura has lived and worked abroad in Germany and traveled throughout Europe studying both modern and classical art. Laura has shown her provocative paintings at the Albuquerque Museum, the Isla Center for the Arts in Mangialo, Guam and with many private galleries in New Mexico and the Pacific.
