ArtHaus66 Gallery is proud to present its second annual group show exclusively devoted to contemporary Spanish artists. Piedra, Papel, Lienzo y Tijeras: Contemporary Spanish Artists II, returns to ArtHaus66 with a whole new collection of young artists who exemplify the latest artistic trends in Spain and the rest of Europe.
The seven invited artists who collaborate in this project all work and live in the capital city of Madrid. Though some originally come from other parts of Spain, they share the metropolitan surroundings of this big city. Its influence is obvious in most of the pieces included in the exhibition. Whether in urban landscapes or imagined seascapes nostalgically evoked by the artist, the old world appeal of landlocked Madrid permeates each of the creations.
These contemporary artists feed off the many contrasting trends that are particularly vital to Madrid: tradition and innovation, past and present. Long-standing techniques such as printmaking emerge as vehicles of cutting edge modernity while drawing becomes an exercise in avant-garde restrain.
Andres Delgado is originally from the Canary Islands, Spain. He is an abstract painter who devotes most of his work to the study of landscapes. Having been born on an island, his work is full of references to the ocean.
Juan Pablo Villalpando was born in Madrid, Spain. He has exhibited internationally since 1992. He is a master printer and director of Escuela de Arte No. 10. His work is pure line and an exercise in effortless elegance and simplicity
Susana Murias was also born in Madrid and her work lovingly echoes the interior views of city dwellings. Calligraphy, printmaking and painting merge to generate a nostalgic, personal and sincere body of work.
Maria Calzadilla is a native from Madrid. A young artist with an exceptional style of elegant minimalism. Her work is quiet and pensive. A respite for the eyes and the soul in the bustling metropolis.
Sonia Higuera was born in Santander. Her work is beautifully stark and surprisingly evocative. Black silhouettes of birds in flight furtively traverse the images, leaving behind only a soft, fleeting memory.
Miriam Cantera owns and operates El Mono de la Tinta, a studio and gallery space devoted exclusively to advance the work of contemporary printmakers in Madrid. Her work is emblematic of the resurgence of abstraction in contemporary Spanish printmaking.
Elena Jimenez was born in the coastal city of Alicante, Spain. She currently lives and works in Madrid. Her current prints echo the earth tones from the Mediterranean landscapes from her childhood. The organic shapes create surfaces of incredible depth and visual interest.
Piedra, Papel, Lienzo y Tijeras: Contemporary Spanish Artists II runs from November 20 to December 31, 2008. The reception, free and open to the public, will take place on Friday, December 5th 2008 from 5 to 9 pm. The gallery is otherwise open by appointment. Three Contemporary Photographers Opening

The evening started out a bit slow and picked up after 6:00 pm…It seems to be a natural progression for most openings…People need to get home and have a bite before they head out…
In the end, the evening went very well. A lively crowd who thoroughly enjoyed the art work and asked a ton of questions about the artists…Frances Melhop’s photographs of faeries attracted a lot of attention…Guests were also very intrigued by Castelo’s technique…
Everyone agreed that the work was, not surprisingly, very unsusual for Albuquerque…A nice and interesting sneak peek at what’s being done elsewhere…
Sculptor Augustine Romero was in attendance and sold one of his unique, recycled sculptures titled Deathcart... Very appropriate for the upcoming Dia de los Muertos holiday…
We would like to say thank you to Sally Fox who gave us an impromptu jazz recital…Her voice was beautiful and the acoustics surprisingly good…
Congratulations to Jennifer Weiss, winner of the gorgeous giclee print by Joie Villeneuve titled “New York” from the Birds Series…Jennifer had the winning ticket in our raffle…Who can beat walking away from an evening of art and good food with a $75 print for only $1?
We will be raffling another work of art on November 7th…Don’t miss it!
If you missed the opening for this show, there will be another opportunity on November 7th for First Friday…As always, 5 to 9 pm…

Photographer Jill Greenberg (Montreal 1967) once said that “a photograph is not necessarily the “truth”; it doesn’t necessarily prove that anything happened”.
In Castelo, Mandell, Melhop: 3 Contemporary Photographers we are witnesses to snippets of the truth. Furtive glimpses of things that have been or perhaps things that will be….Timeless images. Versions of the “truth” filtered through the imagination of these artists.
The silence in Luis Castelo’s images is as deafening as it is magical. His photographs of plants, both terrestrial and marine, permeate with sadness and isolation. The specimens are crystallized, plucked from their environment in order to distill the very essence of their external beauty. This beauty masks the reality and permanence of the already dead plant, stripped of its natural suppleness.
The documentary photos of Gerald Mandell capture in black & white simplicity, understated images of New Mexican life as it used to be. Shot during the 1960’s, they transport us to a landscape of desolate beauty of open, limitless skies. These never seen before quintessentially Southwestern images, are unscripted reality without any of the modern clichés.
The imaginary worlds of Frances Melhop’s photographs are filled with unusual creatures. In his Faeries series, she transforms the ordinary into the most playful of realities. Delicate living beings of miniature proportions and familiar nursery rhyme characters populate these curious images that invite the viewer to believe. These are photographs that present to us that which is seen with your heart rather than with your mind.
Castelo, Mandell, Melhop: 3 Contemporary Photographers runs from October 17 to November 15, 2008.
